2024 Youth Innovation Competition on Global Governance (YICGG2024)

Fudan University and John von Neumann University inaugurated the 2024 “Rongchang Cup” Youth Innovation Competition on Global Governance (YICGG2024) on July 22 in Budapest, Hungary. The theme for this year was “Society with AI: Humanity and Sustainability.”

YICGG is an international competition that aims to provide an opportunity for those aspiring students who are interested in global governance to interpret and spread their ideas.

YICGG was launched in 2007 by Fudan University, sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in China, Shanghai Rong Chang Public Welfare Foundation and organised by the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Fudan University. This year’s competition also included a partnership with Dali University.

YICGG2024 attracted hundreds of contestants worldwide, with 81 undergraduate and graduate students (B.A., M.A., and Ph.D.) from 38 countries reaching the finals. Among them were three master’s students from the MA IPEEA program at the Faculty of East Asian Studies, Ruhr-Universität Bochum: Mrs. Anna-Lena Nolte, Mr. Maitree Sterkau, who attended the full week, and Mrs. Saskia Loges, who could not attend in person.

The opening of YICGG2024 featured several distinguished guests. György Matolcsy, governor of the National Bank of Hungary and honorary professor at Fudan University, met with the attendees before the ceremony. The opening speeches were delivered by Barnabás Virág, deputy governor of the National Bank of Hungary, Chinese Ambassador to Hungary GONG Tao, Tamás Fülöp, rector of John von Neumann University, CHEN Zhimin, vice president of Fudan University, WANG Jianming, honorary chairman of the Shanghai Rongchang Public Welfare Foundation, Péter Rada, vice rector of Budapest Metropolitan University, and Anna Paula Nishio de Sousa, chief of the Division of Digital Transformation and AI Strategies at UNIDO.

Their addresses emphasised the significant impact of AI on global economic and social development and stressed the need for AI development to benefit all, particularly developing countries. They collectively called for international cooperation to advance AI capacity-building initiatives and promote sustainable development through AI for Good.

Throughout the week, participants were divided into nine World Teams to develop innovative proposals on the final theme. The competition’s final round included various segments such as Ignite Talk, Field Work, Global Governance Forum, World Café, We Youth Common Agenda, and Final Presentation, fostering intense intellectual exchange and dialogue. Contestants proposed a range of creative solutions, from optimising labor market data collection using AI to support economic transformation in global south countries, to proposing an AI ethics cooperation initiative for BRICS countries based on a human-machine-environment interaction framework.

Testimonials from Mrs. Anna-Lena Nolte:

Participating in YICGG was an enriching experience and I’m grateful for the chance to learn and discuss policy issues and global governance in an international setting. To me, the coolest part was meeting and working together with students from so many different countries – from Argentina to Timor-Leste. It’s a unique opportunity to work intensively together and learn a lot!

Testimonials from Mr. Maitree Sterkau:

I just want to say thank you for selecting me. Attending the 2024 YICGG in Budapest was an incredible experience. I had the chance to listen to lectures from experts in various fields, all centered around this year’s theme of AI. We developed our own ideas, worked on projects, and engaged in meaningful discussions. I also met some amazing and friendly people from around the world. If you’re open to dialogue and want to challenge yourself, you should definitely give this competition a try. Opportunities like this are rare and truly rewarding.”
