In both teaching and research, CEAC cooperates with universities, research institutes, businesses, civil-society organisations, and public bodies. Our partners and networks support CEAC’s activities.

The Centre for EU-Asia Connectivity’s (CEAC) purpose is to generate critical academic analysis in order to enhance a differentiated and more strategic understanding of EU-Asia affairs and the factors that strengthen and inhibit connectivity within and between the two regions. The Centre contributes to research and teaching in the areas of EU studies and EU-Asia relations. It approaches the understanding of EU-Asia affairs and the role of connectivity from an interdisciplinary perspective. We do this in many ways, including through collaborations with different stakeholders around the world in international networks and projects. For example, we are part of UNIC, one of the prestigious European universities alliances.

CEAC's Networks

In a world that is growing in complexity and becoming more interrelated, and yet fragmented, we must embrace global networks and exchanges. By combining diverse strengths and insights, we can contribute to a shared and sustainable future.

CEAC functions as a hub for students and researchers, where activities are conducted and implemented in collaboration with partners and within our network, such as researchers’ mobility, research projects, as well as student exchange and internship programmes. The Centre established local, national, and international cooperation enabling researchers and students from Europe, Asia, and beyond, to work together on issues of global relevance.

AREA Ruhr has become one of Europe’s largest research and teaching hubs in the field of East Asian Studies. It brings together a wide range of scholarly fields and disciplines, ranging from political science to economics, from sociology to linguistics, from historical to contemporary research. AREA Ruhr thus creates a unique interdisciplinary research and teaching environment for the study of East Asia.

AREA Ruhr is a member of the University Alliance Ruhr. Since 2007, the UA Ruhr facilitates strategic cooperation between the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Ruhr-University of Bochum, and the TU Dortmund University, consolidating resources as well as research and teaching activities. Following the motto “Three universities – One community – Endless opportunities”, UA Ruhr has facilitated the creation of more than 100 cooperative projects in the areas of research, teaching, and administration. With more than 115,000 students and 1,300 professors, UA Ruhr is one of the largest and strongest academic alliances in Germany.

In the context of UA Ruhr (University Alliance Ruhr ), students from the Faculty of East Asian Studies at Bochum University (OAW/RUB) have the opportunity to take classes at the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen (IN-EAST/UDE) and vice versa. Students can find the list of M.A. courses offered in English at the Faculty of East Asian Studies (OAW/RUB) and the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST/UDE) during the summer term of 2024.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum is part of the international university consortium UNIC – European University of Post-Industrial Cities. It is an association of eight universities dedicated to promoting student mobility and social integration. In addition to RUB, UNIC includes universities from Bilbao, Cork, Istanbul, Liège, Oulu, Rotterdam and Zagreb.

By creating a European university, the aim is to increase exchange and cooperation in teaching, research and transfer. Its purpose is to enable students, researchers, teachers and administrative staff to benefit from the opportunities offered by a European campus.

In October 2023, the funding of the University Alliance was extended for another four years with a new name and an updated mission statement. The consortium, which has grown in number from eight to ten universities, will further strengthen its commitment to transformation through inter-institutional learning, teaching and research under its new updated name. The aim is to redesign university research and teaching in superdiverse settings. Read more.

A European-Asian Research Network on Strategies for Promoting Europe-Asia Connectivity (SPEAC), of which Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is a member, was awarded by the EU Erasmus+ Programme Jean Monnet Actions in 2019.

The two research members from RUB are Prof. Sebastian Bersick as principal investigator and Ms. Paulo as Researcher (Associate). The project is composed of six outstanding higher education institutions in Europe and Asia: Korea University, Seoul; EU Center in Singapore Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Poland; Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany; and Uppsala University, Sweden.

The Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) is a leading global higher education and research network of 25 universities across 6 continents. WUN brings together major universities that sit in widely diverse geographical and cultural contexts, forming a partnership that brings an unparalleled richness of talent and resources to bear on major research problems.

Through its Research Development Fund, WUN supports collaborative research that addresses major global challenges: Responding to Climate Change, Public Health, Global Higher Education and Research, and Understanding Cultures. Within each of these Global Challenge areas, researchers from partner universities collaborate on a range of focused problems.

WUN also invests in education. At graduate level, a Research Mobility Programme provides opportunities for early-career researchers, including postgraduate and postdoctoral students, to broaden their professional networks and gain specialized experience in an international context. At undergraduate level, WUN promotes initiatives that bring students from multiple partner universities together for shared research experience.
