The Jean Monnet Chair “Connecting Europe and Asia: People, Power and Policies” (CEAPPP) hosted the lecture on “EU-Asia Connectivity in Higher Education: The Role of the ASEM Education Process organised by the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia, Faculty of East Asian Studies, Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Azirah Hashim, Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics and the Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. 

In her lecture, Prof. Hashim discussed Asia-Europe connectivity in the area of higher education in the context of the ASEM Education Process (AEP). The lecture critically assessed the demand for and the role of the AEP in Asia-Europe cooperation, its contributions, challenges, and prospects. Following an account of the background of the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) and its contribution to Asia-Europe cooperation in the area of higher education an outline of the AEP and its priorities was given and the development of higher education through ASEM education meetings at ministerial and stakeholder levels and through the establishment of the ASEM Education Secretariat was traced. The lecture then addressed the question of how the role of the AEP could be intensified in order to increase further the prospects for higher educational collaboration in the AEP.

Short Bio
Prof. Dr. Azirah Hashim’s previous roles at the university include Executive Director, Asia-Europe Institute; Director, Centre for ASEAN Regionalism; Dean, Humanities Research Cluster; and Dean, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. Currently, she is a member of the steering group for the ASEAN Higher Education Community of Practice, SEAMEO RIHED-SHARE and a member of the Standing Working Group of ASEM Education. She is also President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics and Humboldt Ambassador Scientist, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany from 2021 to 2024.
