The Jean Monnet Chair “Connecting Europe and Asia: People, Power and Policies” (CEAPPP) hosted the lecture on “Grand Strategy, European Security and Asia’s Role” organised by the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia, Faculty of East Asian Studies, Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop, Professor at Ghent University and Director of the Europe in the World Programme at the Egmont–Royal Institute for International Relations in Brussels.

In his lecture, Prof. Dr. Biscop focused on current security affairs and the role of major actors: Are the grand strategies of the great powers mutually exclusive, or can their objectives, and their ways of achieving them, be reconciled? Russia’s war against Ukraine poses the question in very sharp terms. China’s choices will be decisive for its future relations with the EU and the US. But regional powers like India and Japan have to be increasingly taken into account by Europe as well.
