Prof. Dr. Azirah Hashim is a Professor in the English Language Department, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. She was Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Institute (2015-2020) and Director of the Centre for ASEAN Regionalism (2015-2018), University of Malaya. She has published multiple books with internationally renowned academic publishers and articles in journals such as English Today, Higher Education Quarterly, Discourse Studies, and Multilingua. In 2021, she was appointed President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) for a period of three years. She has been involved in capacity building in higher education projects in ASEAN and was project leader of an Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education project titled “Building Research Capacity Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia and Laos” (2017-2021). She was also Principle Coordinator of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (2017-2021) at the Asia-Europe Institute and has been actively involved in ASEAN-EU research, teaching, seminars, and outreach activities. She was awarded the Georg Forster Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2009, the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute Research Fellowship in 2020, the Humboldt Renewed Stay Fellowship in 2021 and the Marie S. Curie FCFP Fellowship in 2022. In addition, she is Humboldt Ambassador Scientist of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation from 2021 to 2024. She is on the editorial/advisory board of journals such as English Today, Journal of Sociolinguistic Studies, Asia-Europe Institute Insights Journal, Journal of Intercultural Communication (Nordic Network), and the Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics.
