Webinar: "Digital Geopolitics in the Asia-Europe Space: Issues, Actors, and Divides Description"

The Jean Monnet Chair “Connecting Europe and Asia: People, Power and Policies” (CEAPPP) hosted the lecture on “Digital Geopolitics in the Asia-Europe Space: Issues, Actors, and Divides” organised by the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia, Faculty of East Asian Studies, Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Jovan Kurbalija, Founding Director of DiploFoundation and the Head of the Geneva Internet Platform. A former diplomat, Dr. Kurbalija has a professional and academic background in international law, diplomacy, and information technology. He has been a pioneer in the field of cyber diplomacy since 1992, when he established the Unit for Information Technology and Diplomacy at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies in Malta.

Global security and geopolitics are increasingly shaped by digital cables, satellites, and data centres. This session will focus on digital and data flows around and across the Euro-Asian continental mass. Will data flows shift from traditional maritime routes of seabed cables from the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal to the Indian Ocean, and then further east towards the Malacca Strait and the Pacific Ocean? What is the geographical distribution of data centres in Europe or Asia? What are the most critical trends in the geoeconomic of tech platforms and e-commerce? What are the digital dimensions of regional integration and initiatives? This session will address these questions and others that influence digital geopolitics within the Asia-Europe space.
